Turning a Past into a Future

This year alone, nearly 1,000 children have benefitted from our Pantries. Children like Tilly.

Unable to afford food and spiralling into debt, St Giles’ Pantry was there to support Tilly and her Mum.

Tilly’s mum, Helen, was made redundant in 2023 and struggled to find work. With only £350 a month to live on, they couldn’t afford the rent or bills and had spiralled into debt.

Before long, the choice was whether both Tilly and her mum could afford to eat at all. Helen also faced challenges with her mental and physical health, often leaving Tilly to scour the bare cupboards for anything to eat for dinner.

“when I asked mum what she was going to have for dinner, she’d say she wasn’t hungry and sometimes I didn’t see her eat all day.”

At St Giles Trust, we believe everyone deserves a seat at the table, to rebuild, recover, and move toward a positive future.

Tilly's mum was referred to our St Giles Pantry, after being made redundant in 2023 meaning she had to choose between staying warm or feeding her 11-year-old daughter, Tilly.

“I don’t know what would have happened if I hadn’t found St Giles when I did. I felt like such a bad mum – I couldn’t feed my child three square meals a day let alone make sure she was getting enough fruit and veg.”

Through the 6 months of support from our Pantry team, the St Giles caseworker put together a plan to support Helen and Tilly. Providing 1:1 support to help manage Helen’s financial issues, as well as sourcing a training opportunity and we supported her to get a paid role as a Teaching Assistant. Our caseworker also helped Tilly to access counselling, helping her process what she had been through.

Most important of all, Helen is now able to provide healthy food for herself and her family, so Tilly never again has to search bear cupboards for dinner.
With your support, we can make sure thousands more children like Tilly have food and support this Christmas and beyond.
