Beth’s Story
Imagine spending Christmas in a bare, freezing flat with no furniture and no way to afford a proper food shop. This was Beth’s reality when she first came to St Giles’ Pantry. She had fled a violent relationship and was left traumatised, struggling to rebuild her life from nothing.
With no washing machine, Beth was forced to wash her clothes by hand in the kitchen sink to save the cost of the laundrette. Despite applying for small grants, she couldn’t get help to make her flat liveable. Life felt overwhelming.
When Beth came to us, the first step was to make sure she had access to nourishing, affordable food through regular visits to our Pantry. We also supported her to successfully apply for a grant to buy a washing machine. This simple change restored her dignity and gave her one less daily struggle to carry alone.
But the Pantry is about more than food. Our staff encouraged Beth to stay positive, focus on her future, and take steps towards independence. With this support, Beth has begun studying for qualifications in social care turning her lived experience into a strength to help others.
Beth’s journey is ongoing, but today her life looks very different from that bare flat. With practical support and encouragement, she has found hope, dignity and the chance of a brighter future.
