Ardan’s Story

Ardan* came to us seeking a role within the education sector, but his journey to securing employment had been far from straightforward. Initially referred to us from his local NHS Trust, for mental health support, his caseworker, recognising the need for specialist expertise in both neurodiversity and mental health, believed that he would benefit from our tailored approach at St Giles,

For Ardan, who is autistic, the job search process had been frustrating and disheartening. Despite having a strong CV that highlighted his exceptional skills in pattern recognition, data analysis, and IT programmes, he found himself repeatedly rejected at the interview stage. Employers often projected limitations onto him, focusing on perceived barriers rather than his unique strengths. This cycle of rejection was taking a significant toll on his mental health, reinforcing feelings of being misunderstood and undervalued.

Understanding these challenges, we worked with Ardan to break down the areas that needed improvement and focus on practical solutions. Recognising that interviews were a key stumbling block, we partnered with Southwark Works and Good People to provide structured interview practice. Additionally, we identified potential employers that were Disability Confident and open to making reasonable adjustments, ensuring that Ardan would be set up for success rather than failure.

As we worked on refining his approach to securing his ideal job, Ardan agreed to consider an invigilator role at a prestigious local college as a stepping stone. He had previous experience in this role and saw it as a way to generate income while continuing to work towards his long-term career aspirations. Supported by St Giles Employment Services team, he successfully secured the position and is looking forward to starting when exam season begins.

Ardan’s success so far highlights the importance of structured and person-centred employment support. By identifying appropriate roles, building confidence, and providing ongoing guidance, we are helping him take meaningful steps toward sustainable employment. Most importantly, Ardan now feels valued, understood, and empowered to navigate his career journey with greater self-assurance.

We remain committed to supporting Ardan in his journey and exploring further opportunities that align with his long-term career goals, ensuring that his skills and potential are fully recognised and utilised.
