SOS Gangs Project
We provide support for young people serving prison sentences for gang-related crime to enable them to break free from this lifestyle on release from prison.
This high profile project, funded by Southwark Council, works with young offenders in Rochester Young Offenders Institution who have a connection to the Southwark area. It works intensively witht he individual both prior to and after their release from prison to divert them away from gang crime, break away from negative associations and build positive futures for themselves.
It offers intensive practical and emotional support and mentoring to clients. The project is led by an ex-offender who has harnessed his own previous experiences to benefit others.
It has worked with over 50 young offenders to date and only five have been recalled to prison, against a national re-offending rate of around 75% for this age group.
Given its huge success, we are now aiming to expand the project to work across a wider geographical area.
