St Giles Trust

Teacher Training for Serving Prisoners.

This project trains serving prisoners to become qualified adult teachers.

The Teacher Training Project builds on the work that is already underway in many prisons where prisoners work as teaching assistants, facilitators and gym instructors.

The qualification offered is City and Guilds 7303 Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector - the level the Government will require all adult teachers to have reached by 2010.

Candidates are trained through a mix of coursework and practical teaching sessions. The qualification ideally places prisoners to pursue a career in adult teaching.

This is a high-level qualification. There is no-one else delivering this work and it provides an excellent route for prisoners to boost their skills and employment.

The course is provided in the community at our head office in Camberwell for prisoners on release on temporary license.  It has previously also been delivered in HMP Wandsworth and HMP Chelmsford to help serving prisoners improve their skills and qualifications.
