Jon Snow to open conference co-hosted by St Giles

14 February 2008

Veteran broadcaster Jon Snow is to open a conference jointly organised by St Giles and The Butler Trust to examine the use of peers when working with offenders.

Called Peer Power: Staff and Prisoners Working in Partnership, the national conference will take place on Thursday 5 June at Newbold Revel Prison Service Training College.

The conference will explore the growth of peer-support projects and their potential to reduce re-offending.

St Giles' own award-winning Peer Advice Project trains serving prisoners to provide an information, advice and guidance to their fellow inmates and there are many other examples of good practice working in prisons and in the community.

The day will give the opportunity for professionals to come together, explore best practice and look at the benefits and limitations of this way of working.

It is aimed at anyone working with offenders including professionals from the prison service and youth justice board, probation services and boards, central government and voluntary and private sector agencies working with offenders.

In addition to Jon Snow, other speakers will include Phil Wheatley, Director General of the Prison Service, Mike Hough from the Institute of Criminal Policy Research and current and ex-offenders who are delivering peer-led projects.

Places are £75 per person.  Further details, including how to book, can be obtained by downloading the flyer in the related media section on the left. Anyone experiencing problems downloading this information can email tamsin.gregory@stgilestrust.org.uk
