St Giles Trust

Adult learner achievements heralded by Dwain Chambers

Sprint star and Olympian hopeful Dwain Chambers joined St Giles Trust to celebrate the achievements of people who had completed our community training courses at a special ceremony in south London on Thursday 4 June. Also present was Cllr Robin Crookshank-Hilton, Deputy Mayor of Southwark.

Around 50 people received certificates and accolades for their efforts in overcoming barriers to gain new skills and qualifications.

For many of the people present, it was the first time they had ever achieved a qualification. St Giles Trust provides training courses in an inclusive, supportive environment specifically targeted at people who are disadvantaged and may lack the confidence to engage with mainstream colleges.

People received certificates for completing courses in vocational subjects such as computer skills, literacy and numeracy, NVQs in Customer Care and Information, Advice and Guidance, and adult teacher training qualifications.

Amongst those receiving accolodes was Wete Malambe, a young woman originally from Zaire who overcame many personal challenges to successfully gain an NVQ Level 2 in Customer Care and employment as a result of that qualification. Wete also won a Adult Learners Award last month in recognition of her efforts.

Rob Owen, Chief Executive of St Giles Trust, said: "I am delighted that Dwain and Cllr Crookshank-Hilton took the time and trouble to be with us on Thursday. It gave everyone a real boost. Our work with offenders mirrors Dwain's experiences in that he has done wrong but is trying to make amends and get his life back on track."

He continued:

"Everyone deserves a second chance. Dwain is a very positive role model to many of our younger clients who have taken the wrong path in life - he is very keen that other people learn from his mistakes and make every effort to turn their life around."
